guest post: Kristi Bernard of Kristi’s Book Nook

Today, I’m pleased to present this guest post from Kristi Bernard of Kristi’s Book Nook!

I have always been an avid reader. When I was a young girl I spent a lot of time in my local library reading Dr. Seuss, Aesop’s Fables and every folktale I could get my hands on. It was always the book covers that attracted my attention. My favorite cover was Where The Wild Things Are. I read because stories always seem to take me away. They still do. But, as a book reviewer, I have to dig a little deeper into a story. I have to point out the general idea and then introduce the parts that have a message for children. I have to show why a parent should be interested in purchasing a particular book for their child.

When I started my blog Kristi’s Book Nook in October of 2009, I set out with one purpose, and that was to read and enjoy as many children’s books as possible. I wanted to share my favorites with whom ever would stop by. I hadn’t been reviewing very long when Elizabeth Bennett with Tiger Tales Books stopped by to thank me for my review of Clumsy Crab. It was funny because I didn’t think anyone was paying attention. She sent me an email asking if I would like to review their fall line of books for kids. Of course I said I would and I was very excited to do so. It was then that I started to think about the books and how I review them.

It wasn’t long before I started reviewing books for other writers that I knew, Book Pleasures and The Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database. Now, I get requests via email, Linked In, FaceBook and lots of publicists. I would love to review everything that comes my way but it is just impossible. There isn’t enough time in the day. As a result, I have to be very picky as to which books I select. I am not able to read books that are longer than 400 pages. I would need more time to give a thorough review. I try not to limit myself to one particular type of book.

  1. Interesting look at how you got involved in book reviews, Kristi. I used to review Spanish books for a publication that is no longer in print. All of the work was volunteer but I did enjoy it. I have considered adding reviews to my own blog but not sure yet because of the time it takes. Are any of your reviews paid? Or is payment simply the copy of the book?
